two fighting half centuries by oshan diyagama (51) and mihira somaratne (50 not out ) saw ananda to a first innings total for 229 for 8 declared in their big match against nalanda at ssc grounds yesterday
the nalandians in reply made a solid start with 57 for no loss at the close . openers malinga gamarachchi ( 25 with three fours) and lasitha amarasuriya ( 25 with two fours ) had faced 22 overs ..
earlier the anandians sent into bat struggled at 34 for 4 against the nalandinas pace duo of malinga surappulige and sanjaya gangodawila who took two wickets each in the first session . ananda opener duminda kularatne was out for a duck while mahela udawatte (12) , yohan wickramage (18) with four fours were soon back to the pavilion early while their key batsman nadeeshan jayakody was out for a duck after facing 7 balls .
however skipper eashan abeysinghe and thilina kumarasinghe (15) put on 35 runs for the fifth wicket to make the score 69 for 5 .at lunch ananda were 87 for 5.abeysinghe who was out for 42 with two fours in 162 minutes also put on 49 runs with dinesh danthanarayana (29 ) for the 6 th wicket .
mihira somaratne and wicket keeper batsman oshan diyagama played some fine strokes and shared an 8 th wicket stand of 106 runs to take ananda to respectability. both players made their maiden half centuries . diyagama the number nine batsman reached his half century with a boundary off ishara dilshan but was out stumped by sakura wijetunga off dilshan . his 51 came in 111 minutes off 97 balls with nine boundaries while somaratne hit six fours in his unbeaten half century which took 134 minutes and 109 balls .
malinga surappulige was the most successful nalanda bowler with 4 for 79 while sanjaya gangodawila took 2 for 46 . wicket keeper wijetungs bagged four victims.
