ananda saw the light of the day in november 1st 1886 in maliban street with late mr. c. w. leadbeater an english theosophist who had come out to assist col. olcott as its founder and first principal. ananda college was popularly known as the buddhist english high school at the commencement. a school which was started with 37 students had improved in many spheres and at present the student population is about 5500. from small beginnings ananda has become the leading sinhalese buddhist school in sri lanka.

many of out present day leaders in various spheres of national life have been educated at ananda. ananda college is the greatest asset the youth of our country has received over hundred years. it has been a gift of the people by the people for the people.

anandians have contributed their mite in every aspect of our national life with distinction.

national unity peace and harmony is their mission. ananda has always been the pre-eminent symbol of buddhist education.
