asela pradeep of ananda college smashed a ten-year-old record in the 200 metres back stroke for boys under 17 on the second day of the 24th sri lanka schools swimming and diving championships conducted by slsasa and held at the sugathadasa stadium swimming pool yesterday.
the former panadura aquatic club swimmer returned a time of 2.36.32 secs in his pet event, 200 metres back stroke. charya de saram of s. thomas' college mt. lavinia held the previous mark of 2.26.53 secs in 1987.
marlon s. delano of st. joseph's college established his second record of the meet in the boys under 19, 800 metres free style with a new time of 9.14.38 secs. former thomian swimmer ghefari dulapandan held the earlier record of 9.40.09 secs.
the third record, the sixth in the meet went to duleeka nanayakkara of s. thomas' college mt. lavinia in the boys under 17, 200 metres breast stroke returning a time of 2.48.29 secs. nishan madawela of s. thomas' college was the holder of the record of 2.49.89 secs.
the meet will be continued today at 8 a.m. spring board diving for all age groups and platform diving for seniors will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. today.
